Please consider that the core card of this deck “Grover” received a rework with patch 111. Also, several cards from this deck got nerfed.
Eufrat here, welcome to my first deck guide. The idea of this series is to introduce interesting and strong decks to newer (and older) players. These decks are supposed to be relatively easy to learn and are meant to be played on the ladder. I guarantee it’s possible to reach Grandweaver rank with each one of them. (*Enter Conquest at your own risk.)
Today I’ll be presenting you the Grover deck.
I could just post the deck code for you to copy, but I encourage you to actually build the deck with me as we go along. That way you’ll remember all of the cards and start thinking about the interactions. I will also give you some choices on the less important cards, so not everyone will finish with the same list.
The basic idea of the deck is to play Grover as soon as possible. It will then enable you to play many powerful cards that require different elements in your grave.
Key Cards
If you manage to collect 8 different elements in your grave, the following will happen:
Meng’Long – Becomes a 2 cost.
World Tree – Becomes an 8/9.
Dreamcalling – Summons {{Cryogen}} out of your prism (You don’t have to run Cryogen in your deck, it’s the only 9 cost unit in wisdom/intellect and you will always summon him). *If you have 7 elements you will summon Sky Phoenix from the deck.
Cygnan Secrets – You need only 7 elements to make this cost 0.
Sky Phoenix – It gets one or more revives.
Skychannel – Becomes 0 cost.
*You can definitely play all of these cards even if you don’t have the elements, they will just be more expensive / a bit weaker. Sometimes you’ll have to do it.
Because Grover is so important we need additional ways to summon him!
Since {{Grover}} is the only 4 cost unit in the deck, you can always find him with Cast in Chrome. This is actually the best way of playing him since Lead is going to overwrite the Roots.
If you don’t use it on Grover, later on, you can use Cast in Chrome to summon {{Sky Phoenix}} with Lead, ensuring it doesn’t get dusted.
Eldritch Lore is used to find Cast in Chrome. If you play this with 0 mana left it will draw CiC onto your hero. This one is a bit tricky to use because it will overwrite the Mana Crystal on your hero. It’s probably not worth it to sacrifice the crystal, so try to look for a way to use the crystal, expend all of your mana, and then play Eldritch Lore for zero.
Example: You have 2 mana and a crystal on your hero. In hand you have a {{Blightcrafter}}. Play the crystal, play Blightcrafter, and then play Eldritch Lore. It’s not that tricky, but you should come up with a plan in the mulligan phase already.
The one drops
Since Grover discards one cost units of different elements, we’re supposed to be running 8 units, one of each element. However, because we start every game with a Mana Crystal, we don’t really need a water card. That leaves us with 7 one cost units. Which ones you should play is debatable, let’s check out the options:
Both of these cards are solid. Glitter is better as a turn one opener, sometimes you can get good value from it. It’s generally better against slow decks. Tragic Poet is better against aggro as it has banner and sometimes his spell {{Rave}} can help you clear the board. The choice is yours, play only one.
Matchstick is way better.
Even though at first glance we are playing a lot of one drops, it doesn’t make too much sense to play Hax. Potion Seller is a good turn one play, even if you run zero one cost spells in the deck and you may get bad spells. He might surprise you with some good finds. Try Hax if you like. (Keep in mind that most of these 1 cost units will be discarded by Grover, so you won’t really play them.)
While Niko might be a decent opener against aggro decks, we can’t really afford to have one less card shown in the mulligan phase. Because if we don’t find Grover we might be in trouble. Ghost Duster is not a bad card, but Lapin just brings way too much value that it’s hard for him not to be our first choice
Whipvine is just superior, due to the fact it can root up whole boards and save your life.
Gato wins here – it has guard, it has banner and it’s actually a decent card in any stage of the game due to its spell {{Sudden Gust}}.
Again, the choice is yours. B Unit has guard and an immediate impact due to the {{Zap}}. Shockpaw gives you some burn/lifesteal later on, plus the unrooting ability with {{supercharge}}. However, my personal favorite is Tactician. He’s a solid turn one play, as he’s hard to kill. If he sticks, you might get a lot of information about the enemy hand. His spell, {{Forcefield}}, is a great way to remove roots from your own units (or other negative effects), it might give you good trades or help you protect your board from board clears.
Let’s check out the remaining possible cards for the deck. One thing you should keep in mind is that we’re supposed to spread our cards across all 8 elements to increase our chance of getting all 8 in the grave super fast. Mana Crystal will give us one, and {{Grover}} will give us four. You will play a card or two before him as well, resulting in 6 or 7 elements in the grave on average. If our deck has a fine balance of elements, we can maximize the chance of getting all 8 by turn 5 or 6.
It’s important to say that not in every game we will find Grover. Those games will be way more difficult, but they are not lost. With the way the deck is built, we can collect a lot of elements without Grover too. That’s the main reason we pay a lot of attention to every card in deckbuilding.
Removal options
Choosing your removal spells depends a lot on the meta. What types of decks are you running into? If everyone is playing Death Sitti, then Burn to a Crisp might be good. If not, try Incinerate.
Are you running into cards like {{Old Fogy}}, {{Flame Phoenix}}, {{Hexed Sentinel}}, {{Blightcrafter}}? Try Eradicate. Are your opponents cheating out {{B.F.R. 9001}} on turn 4? Play Mad Vibes.
Sometimes, if you’re not sure, pick a card that has an element you are missing. So if you already have 4 dark cards, but only 2 mind, pick Mad Vibes.
How about board clears? It’s a personal preference. They might come in handy vs aggressive decks, but they could also be useless vs control. I run only one. Sometimes it saves me from a completely lost position.
Other Cards
Most of the time this will get you a 0 cost {{Skychannel}} or {{Cygnan Secrets}}. And it works as a removal spell too.
A way to get your {{Meng’Long}}.
Very good cards, especially when played together in the same deck.
If you manage to miss {{Grover}}, {{Cast in Chrome}} and {{Eldritch Lore}} in the opening mulligan. You can play this on 3 and there’s a good chance you’ll find a way to play Grover on 4.
Works well with a lot of your units.
You can get great value from it by copying {{Meng’Long}}, {{Sky Phoenix}}, {{World Tree}}, {{Cryogen}} or whatever big thing your opponent might summon.
A good way to unroot Grover or dust an enemy enchantment to draw a card with Cleanse. The healing part is super useful too.
A package that can be very strong
Other cards you could consider: {{Hydrate}}, {{Canny Mask}}, {{Water Rune}}, {{Ari’s Insight}}, {{Reefus}}, {{Bogi Bogi}}, {{Sunpetal}}, {{Think Twice}}, {{Bauble}}, {{Deactivate}}, {{Subjugate}}, {{Whelm}}, {{Spiderella}}, {{Judgement}}, {{Nimbus}}, {{Mechabun}}, {{Gear Grind}}, {{Jakintsu}}, {{Scarred Servitor}}, {{Encapsulate}}…
You get the idea. Experiment yourself!
Final deckbuilding thoughts and tips
Aside from the key cards, a big part of the deck can be changed to suit your needs. Just keep in mind you want a good spread of all elements (water not so much). Be careful not to add a 4c unit, because Grover must be the only one.
If you are not sure which card to play from your hand, always play the element you don’t already have in the grave.
If you have both Cast in Chrome and Grover in the opening mulligan, just keep Cast in Chrome.
Don’t forget you can attack with your units in order to kill them if you are missing their element from the grave. Example: You have a Micron Drone on the board and no metal cards in the grave. Just slam the drone into an enemy unit and you’ll have it. (It may sound obvious, but I forget about it too!)
Don’t be afraid to keep and use your one cost units in the early game. They can help you fend off aggression and even do some damage yourself, while you’re waiting for your Grover and elemental cards.

Hey Eufrat,
Thank you so much for such an in-depth guide on this combo deck! Keep them coming 🙂
It’s really unfortunate that it only lasted a couple of weeks as this deck is officially dead after patch #111 🙁
